The Ottawa Police Service is investigating an alleged hate-motivated assault inside the Rideau Centre Saturday evening.

Police say they responded to the downtown Ottawa mall at approximately 5 p.m.

“A man was shouting remarks and then assaulted a member of the public,” police said in a post to social media.

Ottawa paramedics tell CTV News an adult male in his 40s was transported to hospital in stable condition.

Police said in an update Sunday that a man in his 40s was charged with assault, cause disturbance and breach of probation.

No further details could be provided on hate-motivation with the matter being before the courts, police said.

Police say anyone who has been affected by a hate crime should report it online at ottawapolice.ca/report or by phone at 613-236-1222. For emergencies, call 911.
