An Ottawa man who was fined for dumping motor oil into the ground at a local park took shovel in hand to replace the contaminated soil.

Ottawa Bylaw and Regulatory Services says someone called to report the man for dumping the oil in some grass near the parking lot at Greely West Park on April 3.

Bylaw officers found the man and requested he dig up the area where he poured the oil and replace it with new soil and seed.

“The individual was cooperative and complied with the officer’s request with the help of some of his friends,” said Bylaw Director Roger Chapman in a statement to CTV News Ottawa.

The man was given a $260 ticket for depositing oil with odour in a park, under the Parks and Facilities Bylaw, Chapman said.

“Bylaw and Regulatory Services would like to remind everyone that City of Ottawa parks are shared spaces that need to be kept safe and clean for everyone,” said Chapman.

The City of Ottawa has a website that can direct residents to safe places to dispose of hazardous waste and other household items. There are also several household hazardous waste disposal events throughout the year.
