NCC begins flooding operations on Rideau Canal Skateway

The National Capital Commission is taking advantage of the cold temperatures to begin flooding operations for a new season of skating on the Rideau Canal Skateway.

In a post on Instagram, the NCC said teams flooded a section of the Rideau Canal Skateway between Patterson Creek Bridge and Bank Street on Sunday.

Flooding operations are expected to resume on Monday.

“They use pumps to draw water from below the ice surface and help build the thickness needed to safely open the Skateway,” the NCC said.

“For your safety, please stay off the ice until it officially opens. Our crews are professionals who know how to manage the risks associated with their work.”

The temperature is expected to drop to -12 C tonight, but mild temperatures are expected on Wednesday and Thursday. Environment Canada is calling for a high of 1 C on Wednesday and 3 C on Thursday, before cold temperatures return on Friday.

The Rideau Canal Skateway opened on Jan. 11, 2025, and closed on March 10. The Skateway did not open for skating during the winter of 2022-23.

According to the NCC’s website, the earliest opening for the Rideau Canal Skateway was Dec. 18 in 1972.

The Rideau Canal Skateway opened on Dec. 31, 2013, and Dec. 30, 2018.
