Ottawa institutions and some city councillors are taking advantage of the date to share jokes this April Fools’ Day.

Here’s a collection of some of the gags we’ve seen:

“Acorn alert!”

“We are moving away from all our social media platforms and will now send updates on City Services via carrier squirrels!” the City of Ottawa said on Instagram.

“After careful consideration, we have decided that carrier squirrels are the most efficient and adorable way to keep you informed. Expect to see these furry messengers delivering ‘Acorn Alerts’ right to your doorstep.”

‘Feathered and free’ Wi-Fi in Ottawa

“Introducing Goose Go: free Wi-Fi on the fly!” said Ottawa Tourism on Instagram. “Starting May 1, simply scan any Canadian goose in Ottawa to connect, whether you’re downtown or exploring neighbourhoods and rural areas in Canada’s capital city.”

‘Electric Avenue’ playing on OC Transpo buses

“Until further notice, Electric Avenue by Eddy Grant will be playing inside and outside our electric buses,” OC Transpo said on X.

Square eggs at the Canada Agriculture and Food Museum

“Our hens have been working hard to lay perfectly square eggs—easier to stack and store!” the Canada Agriculture and Food Museum said in an Instagram post.

Canadarm getting a wristwatch

“It’s time for an upgrade! The iconic Canadarm is finally getting what it’s always needed—a wristwatch! After decades of precision work in space, it’s about time we gave it a way to check the clock,” said the Canada Aviation and Space Museum on Instagram

Crazy Kitchen being straightened

“Due to building code violations, the Crazy Kitchen must be leveled. Engineers say the tilted floor and skewed walls cause balance issues, confusion, and too much fun—none of which meet today’s strict standards," the Canada Science and Technology Museum said on Instagram.

Ottawa Bylaw’s latest (and furriest) hire

“We’re thrilled to introduce our newest (and furriest) team member, Jovie! He’s an expert in tail wags, and boosting office morale,” Ottawa Bylaw said on X.

Giraffes to roam Experimental Farm

“I am very excited with the agreement signed with the Toronto Zoo to welcome a family of giraffes to Ottawa this summer that will be allowed to freely roam and graze through the Experimental Farm. River Ward - the place to be!” said River Ward Coun. Riley Brockington on X.

Squirrel-proof bird feeder bylaw

“As part of the City’s broader efforts to manage rising rat activity in our neighbourhoods, all outdoor bird feeders must now be squirrel-proof. Research shows that properly designed feeders reduce food waste on the ground,” said Beacon Hill-Cyrville Coun. Tim Tierney on X.

While the post appears legitimate, the link to “learn more” leads to the music video for “Never Gonna Give You Up” by Rick Astley.

‘Slow and steady’ mascot for Rapid FC

“Rapid is fine, but slow and steady wins the race! Your new favourite sloth is coming soon! What should we name her?” the Ottawa Rapid FC said on Instagram.

‘Stunning collection’ at Canadian Museum of History

“Under conservation rules, these treasures can only be removed from the collection storage facility for one day every year. So don’t let this chance slip through your fingers,” the Canadian Museum of History said on Instagram, next to a photo of an empty display case.
