Ottawa’s former top doctor Vera Etches reflects on her new role as President and CEO of CHEO, and her priorities for the future of the children’s hospital.

It’s been one month since Dr. Vera Etches took over as president of the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO).

Etches became President and CEO of CHEO effective March 3, 2025.

“I’m very happy to be part of team CHEO. It’s been so inspiring,” Etches said.

“I think there is a great connection between Ottawa Public Health (OPH) and CHEO. We work together. We have the same goals of healthy children and youth ... This is a health system for children and youth. And that’s what I want to be part of.”

The hospital’s board of Directors announced the appointment late last year.

“Dr. Etches’ stellar reputation, extensive experience managing large, complex organizations, and success navigating major health crises like the pandemic were key factors in the Board’s decision,” a news release said. “Her leadership of a major healthcare organization with broad community reach has prepared her well for the challenges of leading a pediatric health centre with a focus on connected care. Her strong relationships with numerous community partners and her experience with many of CHEO’s federal, provincial and municipal partners will be key assets to her new role.”

As President and CEO, Etches oversees all aspects of CHEO’s operations.

When asked about her priorities, she said ensuring patients have a smooth experience in the emergency department is the most important.

“For me, the top one is the experience through the emergency department. That does mean it’s the flow; it’s from before emergency, through emergency , and how people can get out of the hospital in a smooth way with good discharge support,” she added.

Etches notes that growing and adding space is also another priority, citing population growth and community needs.

“We want to continue to go on the pathway where everyone will be able to access excellent care, world class care when they need it in the hospital, through the emergency department,” she said.
