18-year-old killed in single-vehicle crash near Pakenham, Ont.

A 17-year-old driver is facing impaired driving charges following a fatal crash near Pakenham, Ont.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a single-vehicle crash on the 8^th Concession of South Pakenham, near Cedar Hill Side Road, in Mississippi Mills, shortly before midnight Monday.

OPP Const. Corey Noonan told CTV News Ottawa it was a single-vehicle rollover on the road.

“A passenger was found trapped in the car, while the driver and another passenger were able to get out,” the OPP said.

“Members of the Mississippi Mills Fire Department were able to free the trapped individual.”

Police say an 18-year-old man from Mississippi Mills Township was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two other people were transported to the hospital with minor injuries and released overnight, according to Noonan.

Police said a 17-year-old is facing charges of operation while impaired causing death, operation while impaired causing bodily harm and operation while impaired – alcohol concentration (80 plus).

The crash occurred across the road from Cedar Hill Christmas Tree Farm.

“The number of impaired drivers has increased steadily over the past three to five years,” Noonan told CTV News Ottawa.

“We had seen a downturn, but, unfortunately, it has gone up.”
