Homicide east of Ottawa leaves 1 dead, OPP charge 83-year-old man

Ontario Provincial Police are investigating following an incident that left one man dead. One arrest has been made. CTV’s Kimberley Johnson reports.

An 83-year-old man has been charged following a homicide that left one person dead Friday afternoon in Rockland, Ont., east of Ottawa, according to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).

Gilles Martel of Rockland has been charged with second-degree murder.

Police say they received a call shortly before 3:00 p.m. to a home on Lalonde Street.

When police arrived at the scene, they located the victim who was transported to hospital and pronounced dead, and took the suspect into custody.

There is no concern for public safety, police add.

“As we are just in the early stages of the investigation, there is no further information that can be provided,” the OPP told CTV News Ottawa in an email.

The OPP asked residents to expect increased police presence is in the area following the incident.

The investigation is ongoing.

Rockland is east of Ottawa. It is part of the city of Clarence-Rockland.
