Young Sudbury actor scaring up a storm in latest film project

Sudbury youth actor Chase B. Robertson stars in the new horror sequel 'Black Phone 2'. The 12-year-old actor, who began his training at That Creative Loft.

Sudbury actor Chase B Robertson is getting a taste of success with his latest role in the psychological thriller, Black Phone 2, which hits theatres Friday.

“Just really, really scary, from what I filmed,” Chase told CTV News.

The 12-year-old plays ‘Spike’ in the sequel to the 2021 horror movie. Both movies star Ethan Hawke as the villain known as ‘Grabber’

“There’s a lot of jump scares from the other actors that I think are really going to terrify some people,” Chase said.

The young actor has been working on his craft for the past five years with smaller roles in other films.

He caught the acting bug after taking classes at ‘That Creative Loft’ in Greater Sudbury.

Training hub for actors

Owner Kelly Lamb said ‘That Creative Loft’ is a training hub for actors and models. Clients can get acting coaching, audition taping, headshots and other services.

“I actually remember his first class because he wasn’t shy. He was so kind and just eager to learn,” Lamb said.

“He really stood out from Day 1 -- and from Day 1 he has continued to flourish into this amazing actor and now we’re going to see him on the big screen.”

Lamb said the best part of her job is seeing her clients succeed in booking acting gigs.

“I have a huge smile on my face because I’m so proud of Chase, and I’m proud of all my students,” she said.

“Acting isn’t easy. To act is to push yourself outside your comfort zone. That’s impressive in my eyes.

Although helping Chase with his acting gigs involves schedule-juggling with her own full-time career, his mom, Chrystal Roberston, said watching her son succeed has been rewarding.

Working professional

“When they become a working professional, you see a completely different side of them when the cameras are on, in a room where 30 people are counting on them,” she said.

“Whereas when they’re out playing soccer or baseball, they’re sort of just a kid.”

When asked if there were any acting jobs on the horizon, Chase was tight-lipped, only saying he’d like to try acting on a television series next.

“I think it’s just fun just seeing yourself on the screen and seeing other people inspired by the media that you’ve produced,” he said.

The Robertsons said they’ve invited their friends and family to watch Black Phone 2 on the big screen with them Friday evening.

The film is rated R, meaning anyone 17 and under must be accompanied by a parent or adult.
