World’s biggest goal light to shine for Canada in Four Nations final

Published:

The 'World's Biggest Goal Light' in Sudbury, Ont., is lit up in red and white for the Four Nations hockey final between Canada and the U.S. on Thursday night.

The world’s biggest goal light is set to go off each time Team Canada scores in the Four Nations hockey tournament final versus the United States on Thursday evening.

Late last year, the old downtown water tower in Sudbury, Ont., was converted to a 120-foot goal light by Dario Zulich, owner of local OHL team, the Sudbury Wolves.

“This is going to be a game to remember,” Zulich told CTVNewsNorthernOntario.ca in an interview Thursday.

“The more we thought about it, the more we said, ‘Why not have our world’s biggest goal light on display for every time Team Canada scores a goal?’”

The tower will be lit up in Canada’s red and white colours Thursday and will flash red when Team Canada scores.

“The project features over 100 lighting fixtures and 2,500 LEDs, with local lighting expert and artist Andre Labelle from Y-Lighting contributing his creative vision to the design,” Sudbury Wolves Sports and Entertainment (SWSE) said in a November news release.

Resembling the familiar hockey symbol, the huge structure lights up every time a Wolves player scores. During the holidays, the tower also featured a light show that was set to music.

If Canada wins, Zulich said he will keep the goal light lit up for the next few days.

“It is a symbol of our country and of our sport and we want to win,” he said.

“We’re going to win and I can’t contain myself I’m so happy, I’m so excited.”

Zulich said he hasn’t received any negative feedback on the world’s biggest goal light.

“When we installed the lights, I was hoping that I didn’t overpromise and under deliver,” he said.

“Everyone I’ve talked to just loves the light, how it changes colours steadily, it’s like our CN Tower and we’re proud of it.”
