Troubled teen charged with arson in the Sault

Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services responded to a fire on Queensgate Boulevard Monday morning.

A 16-year-old has been charged with arson and mischief in Sault Ste. Marie after a fire was set on Queensgate Boulevard early Monday morning.

The teen was already under release conditions under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

The current incident took place around 1:30 a.m., when a 911 call reported a fire in a residence.

“Upon arrival, officers were advised by Sault Fire Services a fire had occurred inside a bedroom, causing significant damage within the room,” Sault police said in a news release.

Spread from the kitchen

“An investigation revealed the accused youth had lit something on fire in the kitchen and returned to their bedroom. They then left their bedroom once it was on fire. No physical injuries were reported.”

Charges include arson with disregard for human life, mischief over $5,000 and failing to comply with a sentence imposed under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

The accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
