Sault teen charged with impaired driving in fatal crash gets bail

The 18-year-old Sault Ste. Marie driver charged with impaired and dangerous driving in a fatal crash on Easter that killed another teen is out on bail.

An 18-year-old from Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., who is charged with dangerous and impaired driving in a crash that killed a 15-year-old and injured another on Easter Sunday is being released on bail.

Gregory Parise appeared in a bail hearing Thursday morning at the Sault Ste. Marie Courthouse wearing a typical orange jumpsuit.

Parise was arrested at the scene of the crash on Goulais Avenue around 1 a.m. April 20 after the pickup truck he was driving struck two younger boys riding an E-bike.

Connor Dunn was pronounced dead at the scene and the other 15-year-old was sent to hospital with serious injuries.

“An investigation determined the accused was driving a pickup truck northbound on Goulais Avenue and, when attempting to turn left onto Third Line West, struck the two victims as they were travelling southbound on Goulais Avenue on an e-bike,” police said in a news release Tuesday.

“Upon speaking with (the) accused, officers developed grounds to believe their ability to operate a motor vehicle was impaired by alcohol.”

Parise is charged with impaired driving causing death and bodily harm, dangerous driving causing death and bodily harm, novice driver having any alcohol in their system, G1 licence holder driving at an unlawful hour, underage drinking and failing to surrender their driver’s licence.

The charges against him have not been proven in court.

He has been in police custody since his arrest and is expected to be released Thursday.

Parise has three sureties, who will each put up $20,000 as bail, and has two locations where he can reside -- Sault Ste. Marie and Beardmore.

As part of his release, he is not allowed to contact the victims’ families or several others who may be called to testify.

An out-of-town Crown is being used in the case due to a conflict of interest, the court heard.

A publication ban imposed by the court prevents CTVNewsNorthernOntario.ca from publishing any details involving the evidence presented.

His next scheduled court appearance is May 26.
