Sault suspect accused of faking an emergency to get out of paying their beverage bill

A 60-year-old in Sault Ste. Marie already on probation has been charged with fraud and other offences following an incident April 4.

Police were called around 11:40 p.m. to respond to an incident on Queen Street East.

“Upon arrival, officers learned the accused had requested staff members call emergency services but refused to identify themselves and refused to pay for their beverages,” police said in a news release Monday.

“Officers gave the accused another opportunity to pay but they refused. When officers advised they were being arrested, the accused threatened to fight them and physically resisted. They were arrested.”

Charges include fraudulently obtaining food, beverage or accommodation, resisting arrest and three counts of violating probation.

The accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
