A 26-year-old man has been charged with manslaughter after a fatal shooting last week in Sault Ste. Marie, police said in a news release Saturday.

Officers responded to reports of gunfire just before midnight on March 27 at a multi-unit residence in the 600 block of Bay Street.
Authorities found a 25-year-old victim with a gunshot wound, who was pronounced dead after being transported to hospital.

After a week-long investigation, detectives with the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service identified a suspect and arrested the accused on Friday in the 200 block of Wellington Street West.
As a result of the investigation, the accused is charged with manslaughter, four counts of possessing a firearm or ammunition contrary to a prohibition order, and failing to comply with a probation order.
Police confirmed the victim and accused knew each other, calling the incident “isolated.”
The victim’s identity has not been released by police.
The accused remains in custody pending a bail hearing.
