Police officer seriously injured in stabbing in Wiikwemkoong

A police officer who was stabbed in Wiikwemkoong on Monday had to be taken to Health Sciences North by Ornge helicopter. Two men have been arrested.

A police officer in Wiikwemkoong was stabbed early Monday morning and was taken to Health Sciences North in Sudbury for treatment by Ornge Helicopter.

In a news release, Wikwemikong Tribal Police said the incident took place while officers were responding to an incident around 4 a.m. on Andrew Crescent.

The release said the officer “sustained knife-related injuries,” but didn’t say why police were responding or the sequence of events leading to the injury.

“We ask for continued patience and cooperation from the community as our police services work diligently to gather information and bring clarity to this situation,” the release said.

Two men, ages 19 and 20, “have been taken into custody in connection with the occurrence.”

“There is no ongoing threat to public safety. The Ontario Provincial Police and UCCM Anishnaabe Police are assisting with the investigation.”

Ontario Provincial Police confirmed Monday afternoon the officer “sustained serious injuries.”
