Northern Ont. motorist facing multiple charges after a traffic stop for a plate violation

Published:

Efforts to reduce impaired driving in the northeast seem to be working in some communities – provincial police say stats are still high.

A licence plate violation has led to several charges – including impaired driving – for a northern Ontario man.

On Feb. 12 at about 6 p.m., officers with the West Parry Sound Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) detachment pulled over a vehicle on James Street in Parry Sound, said police in a news release.

“Officers stopped a vehicle on James Street due to a licence plate violation and observed open alcohol in the vehicle,” OPP said.

As a result of the incident, the driver, a 46-year-old man from Henvey Inlet First Nation, was charged with driving while under suspension, operating a motor vehicle without insurance and two impaired driving charges – including having a blood alcohol concentration of more than 80 – as well as charged for using a plate not authorized for the vehicle and having care or control of a motor vehicle with open container of liquor.

In addition to the charges the accused’s driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days and the vehicle stopped was impounded for seven days by police.

The accused was released from police custody and is scheduled to appear in court on March 18.
