North Bay pair charged with drug trafficking at traffic stop

In what police are call proof the system needs repairs, almost half of people North Bay police checked on were violating bail conditions.

Concern over a suspected impaired driver in North Bay led police to seize $5,000 in drugs early Wednesday morning.

A vehicle travelling in the area of Chippewa Street and Cassells Street around 1:45 a.m. was pulled over and the driver was allegedly showing visible signs of impairment, North Bay Police Service said in a news release Thursday.

Officers saw “a quantity of suspected cocaine in plain view inside the vehicle,” leading to the 39-year-old male driver and 30-year-old female passenger to be arrested.

During a search, officers found approximately 47 grams of suspected cocaine and around 37 suspected methamphetamine tablets.

“The estimated street value of the drugs seized in this incident is approximately $5,000,” police said.

Both occupants were charged with two counts of drug trafficking.

The driver was also charged with failing to comply with a release order and impaired driving after testing confirmed his ability to operate a vehicle was impaired by either alcohol or drug intoxication.

The woman was released and is scheduled to appear in court March 4 while the man was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
