More nasty weather expected to hit northeastern Ontario on Wednesday night. Here is what you need to know about the forecast.

Environment Canada has issued a freezing rain warning for areas in and near Greater Sudbury, Sault Ste. Marie, Timmins and North Bay.

Freezing rain totalling as much as five mm on some surfaces is expected to begin Wednesday afternoon, Environment Canada said in a weather warning.

The warning is in effect this afternoon through tonight.

“Snow and ice pellets will begin early this afternoon before transitioning to freezing rain this afternoon into this evening,” Environment Canada said.

Strong winds

“Prior to the transition to freezing rain, snowfall amounts up to five cm may occur over some locations. Easterly winds gusting to nearly 50 km/h, except up to 80 km/h for locations near the North Channel to Sault Ste. Marie may lead to areas of reduced visibility in blowing snow.”

The strong winds may also worsen any tree damage.

“As temperatures rise above the freezing mark tonight into early Thursday morning, precipitation is expected to change over to drizzle or light rain,” the warning said.

“Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery. Ice build-up may cause tree branches to break. Take extra care when walking or driving in affected areas.”
