A gas station employee in Hearst who refused to sell alcohol to an already inebriated customer alerted police when the customer left the store.

The incident took place at a gas station on Highway 11 on March 29 around 7 p.m., Ontario Provincial Police said Tuesday.

“The employee refused to sell alcohol to a customer due to suspected impairment and immediately reported their concerns to police,” police said in a news release.

“Officers arrived and located the driver asleep behind the wheel of a parked vehicle in the gas station lot. Upon investigation, police determined the driver had been consuming alcohol.”

Novice driver

Further testing at the OPP detachment led to several impaired driving charges, including being a novice driver with a blood alcohol contact above zero.

The 43-year-old suspect from Constance Lake was released and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on June 11 in Hearst.

The driver received a 90-day driver’s licence suspension and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.

“The James Bay OPP commends the gas station employee for making the call,” police said.

“The OPP encourages members of the public to call 911 if they suspect someone is driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs.”
