44% of Sudbury’s homeless cite evictions as primary cause: Survey

Sudbury’s homeless count hits more than 500; evictions and low income are the top causes. 72% are long-term locals, straining social services.

Next week, Greater Sudbury city council will review a staff report detailing the findings of a recent count and survey of the city’s homeless population. Conducted in October as part of the federally mandated Point-in-Time Count, the study identified 505 individuals experiencing homelessness in Sudbury, along with key insights into their circumstances.

Among them is Alana Graydon, 44, who has been unhoused since October after being evicted from her trailer when her landlord needed the unit for family. Graydon, who lives with a learning disability and relies on the Ontario Disability Support Program, receives just over $800 per month – far below what’s needed to secure stable housing.

“The rent is expensive these days to afford at least a one-bedroom,” Graydon said.

The count revealed that 44 per cent of Sudbury’s homeless population lost housing due to eviction, while 43 per cent cited insufficient income as the primary cause.

Ray Landry, Homelessness Network coordinator, highlighted concerning trends, including the growing visibility of older adults in crisis.

“A couple of remarkable notes in the Point-in-Time Count was that 12 per cent of those counted were seniors over 60. That’s something we expected anecdotally from the people we’re seeing on the streets. Also notable is the heightened number of evictions,” said Landry.

The surge in homelessness has strained local social services. Evie Ali, the executive director of The Go Give Project, emphasized the challenges organizations face in meeting demand.

“Capacity is a really big issue – not just for us, but for many agencies. Staffing is one of the most expensive budget items, and it’s become unattainable to maintain the number of staff needed to serve the growing numbers we’re seeing,” Ali said.

Despite the hardships, Graydon remains hopeful. She expressed gratitude for the shelter provided by Salvation Army Cedar Place but longs for permanent housing.

“I will get a place eventually. I just gotta keep strong, keep positive,” she said.

The fall survey also found that 72 per cent of respondents had lived in the Sudbury area for over five years – a stark shift from the 2021 Point-in-Time Count, where 70 per cent reported being from out of town.

The data underscores deepening local housing challenges, prompting calls from advocates for targeted solutions.
