Car fire forces evacuation of residential building in Verdun

Residents were evacuated from a building in Montreal’s Verdun borough early Friday morning after the flames from a “suspicious” car fire, according to Montreal police (SPVM), threatened their homes.

The force received a 911 call at 1:15 a.m. about a blaze in an alleyway near Godin Street and Bannantyne Avenue.

“By the time police arrived, the fire had spread to another car parked nearby, and was threatening to spread to a neighbouring building,” said Manuel Couture, a spokesperson with Montreal police.

He adds that the building, which comprises a dépanneur on the ground floor and housing on the upper floors, did not sustain major damage.

There were no reported injuries.

The two vehicles have been towed for expert analysis.

The file has been transferred to the Montreal police arson squad.
