A 46-year-old woman is dead after being hit by a car in downtown Montreal.

Montreal police (SPVM) received several 911 calls at 2:15 a.m. about the incident on René-Lévesque Boulevard and Crescent Street.

“When the police arrived on the scene, they located the pedestrian on the ground,” said Caroline Chèvrefils, a spokesperson with Montreal police. “She was unconscious, and the police performed resuscitation manoeuvres on the victim, followed by paramedics who arrived on the scene.”

The victim was transported to hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.

“According to the first information, the driver was driving west on René-Lévesque Boulevard,” said Chèvrefils. “The collision with the pedestrian occurred at Crescent Street when the pedestrian crossed René-Lévesque north to south when her light was red.”

The 24-year-old driver was not injured.

“The police arrested the driver for driving while impaired,” said Chèvrefils. “He was transported to an investigation centre to take a breathalyzer test.”

A perimeter has been established to allow investigators to analyze the scene.

Westbound René-Lévesque Boulevard remains closed between de la Montagne and Bishop streets.
