A 29-year-old suspect has been arrested after an elderly couple was assaulted last week in Montreal’s Saint-Leonard borough.

Montreal police (SPVM) states the man was apprehended last Friday.

“Searches in the Rivière-des-Prairies-Pointe-aux-Trembles borough and on the South Shore also enabled investigators to seize several items of evidence,” the force notes.

He appeared in court to be charged with intentionally discharging a firearm, possession of a weapon for the purpose of committing an offence, pointing a firearm, assault and conspiracy.

On March 25, Montreal police received a 911 call at 9:30 p.m. about gunshots heard on Descartes Street.

“When police arrived on the scene, they located two victims,” police stated. “Both victims had sustained injuries caused by physical force, but none by gunshot.”

The suspects fled in a vehicle before officers arrived.

The couple, a woman aged 71 and a man aged 82, were taken to hospital.

Their lives are not considered to be in danger.

Montreal police notes the investigation into the incident is not yet over, “due to the possible involvement of one or more other suspects in this case,” and a need to understand the motive behind the assault.
