English-speaking seniors in Quebec say they are having a harder time accessing health services and it can have an affect on their quality of life.

A new report shows that English-speaking seniors have a harder time accessing health services in Quebec, and it can have an effect on their quality of life.

The Quebec English-Speaking Communities Research Network (QUESCREN) out of Concordia University found that anglophone seniors face unique challenges such as limited support and a growing need for services.

“Having access to government services or health services is a very great issue for English speaking seniors, particularly outside the region of Montreal,” said Seniors Action Quebec president Richard Silver.

Navigating hospitals, clinics and even online resources, such as Info-Santé, is often overwhelming.

The study shows that the language gap can have serious consequences.

Silver said that for half of Quebec’s anglophone seniors, who don’t speak French, it’s even tougher.

“They didn’t have an opportunity when they were young to acquire those French language skills that many younger people aquire today,” he said.

The challenges, he added, go beyond language, as the study highlights economic struggles.

“A higher proportion of English-speaking seniors live under the low income cut-off line,” said Silver.

The economic barrier makes it even harder to access support, which is often digital or requires a higher level of education.

The study comes as advocacy groups are calling on Francois Legault’s CAQ government to boost funding for community groups.

“These are settings which permit English speaking seniors to get together for their well-being, psychological and otherwise,” said Silver.

With the provincial budget set for March 25, advocates hope the government listens and takes action.
