Quebec’s National Assembly prorogued until May 5

The National Assembly in Quebec City has been prorogued until May 5.

The news was confirmed by Premier François Legault’s office on Wednesday.

“In agreement with both candidates for the leadership, the Cabinet has adopted a decree to extend the parliamentary session and to convene the National Assembly for a new session starting on May 5,” said press attache Catherine Hamel. “This decision will give the teams the time they need to prepare and ensure a smooth transition following the election of a new premier.”

Starting Tuesday, CAQ party members began voting for their next leader who will replace outgoing Legault.

The election will determine whether former education and environment minister Bernard Drainville or former economy minister Christine Fréchette will become the next leader and, thus, next premier of Quebec.

Legault announced in January that he would step down as leader after winning back-to-back provincial elections in 2018 and 2022.

The winner will be selected on Sunday.
