Florida Panthers defenceman Niko Mikkola has been fined $5,000 US, the highest fine allowed under the NHL collective agreement.

Mikkola was sanctioned for unsportsmanlike conduct and received a major penalty for an act committed towards the end of the game against the Montreal Canadiens on Sunday March 30.

The incident occurred at 19:58 of the third period, when Mikkola unleashed a powerful slap shot from his own territory in the direction of the Canadiens’ goalkeeper.

The fine will be paid to the NHL’s Player Emergency Fund.
