Round two: more snow coming for Montreal this weekend

Montrealers were shoveling the snow after Thursday's storm as they prepare for another one this weekend.

Following Thursday’s winter storm, more heavy snow is tracking toward the Montreal area.

Increasing clouds will roll in on Saturday, which will start with a temperature of -17 C before the mercury moves up to a daytime high of -9 C.

Saturday afternoon could potentially bring up to a light 1 centimetre of snow, but Sunday is when the bulk will come.

Environment Canada has issued a winter storm watch for the Island of Montreal and surrounding areas.

As the low pressure system moves through the province of Quebec, those in Montreal could see up to 42 centimetres of snow with a daytime high of -9 C on Sunday.

Special snow removal operation Friday night

The City of Montreal said snow removal crews will begin a special operation Friday night. Crews will clear snow until 7 p.m. before switching over to a removal operation.

It’s a race against the clock. Sabourin says it usually takes six days to remove 30 centimetres of snow, but this time crews will only have 36 hours to do as much as they can.

“There is no way we will do everything. So we will concentrate our efforts on the main roads and those little street needed to be done in order to help the emergency teams,” Sabourin said.

Once the snow starts to fall on Sunday, city workers will pause removal operations and switch back to clearing.

Montrealers are also preparing to dig out their cars, balconies and walkways all over again.

Residents are being advised to check the city’s website on parking bans and consult the snow removal operations map.

Monday is expected to bring a break with sun and clouds and a daytime high of -10 C.
