Montrealers push back against Trump’s tariffs

Montrealers gather to protest U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs.

Shoulder to shoulder, hundreds of protestors made their message loud and clear in Montreal on Sunday: Canada will never be the 51st state.

People from across the province gathered at the base of Mount Royal in downtown Montreal, joining a growing movement across North America to fight back against U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs and what they call a toxic tide of “Trumpism.”

“It’s important for us not to say, ‘what’s happening in the United States will not happen here,‘” said Quebec Solidaire spokesperson Ruba Ghazal at the protest. “Our rights are fragile, so it’s important to protect them.”

Demonstrators say their march was about more than just Trump’s economics polices, extending to the social causes they say he is putting at risk.

“Right now, there’s an assault on academia in the United States. I’m here because I want this to not happen in my country, Canada,” said pediatric emergency physician Joanne Liu.

The demonstrations came a day after Americans gathered in all 50 states to also protest the president’s agenda.
