MLHU confirms first lab-tested case of measles in 2025

The Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU) has reported the first lab confirmed case of measles in the region for 2025. Although there have been several reported exposures in the area in recent weeks, this is the first lab-tested case in a resident since March of last year.

All people in the region that were exposed to the case have since been notified.

According to MLHU, the person was likely exposed in a neighbouring jurisdiction. Several nearby communities have reported measles cases including Huron-Perth Public Health, and Southwest Public Health.

“Middlesex-London Health Unit is working with the province and neighbouring health units to minimize the transmission of measles in Southwestern Ontario,” said Dr. Alex Summers, Medical Officer of Health, Middlesex-London Health Unit. “As the situation evolves, we will provide updated guidance to the community.”

It is recommended that locals confirm that they are in fact protected against measles, “Although the transmission of measles within Middlesex-London is currently limited, it is critical that everyone takes this opportunity to ensure they are immune to this virus,” said Summers.

In general those born before 1970 are considered immune to measles, those born after 1970 should confirm that their vaccines are up to date, with two doses of measles vaccine.

Anyone that believes they are unvaccinated or under vaccinated should speak to their health care provider.
