An acting chief administrative officer was appointed at the Middlesex County Council meeting Tuesday.

Durk Vanderwerff will begin his role at an April 22 council meeting.

“We are pleased to welcome Durk Vanderwerff as acting CAO,” said Warden Brian Ropp. “Durk’s years of service and commitment to Middlesex County make him an excellent fit for the role. His professionalism and strong understanding of County operations will ensure stability for our organization during this transition. Council is confident in Durk’s ability to guide our team and maintain momentum on key priorities.”

Vanderwerff takes over for former CAO William (Bill) Rayburn, who announced his retirement on March 31. He joined the county in 1998, and is the longest-serving CAO in Middlesex County’s history.

Vanderwerff has been with Middlesex County for more than 30 years in various positions, including his current position as director of Planning and Development, a role he has held since 2016.

“I am honoured to be trusted with this role and to continue serving Middlesex County. I look forward to supporting Council and staff as we work together to advance the County’s priorities and ensure a smooth transition in leadership,” said Vanderwerff.

The search for a permanent CAO remains ongoing.
