A human trafficking investigation that started in London in 2023 has resulted in the arrest of five people.
Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) say that a London Police Service (LPS) investigation into a man in Pickering kicked off an investigation which was taken over by DRPS. In 2024, DRPS established a Provincial Human Trafficking Intelligence-Led Joint Forces Strategy (IJFS) team with LPS.
A search warrant at residences in Pickering, Thorold and Oshawa resulted in the seizure of two firearms, 1.5 kgs of cocaine, other narcotics, and $115,000 in cash. Several people were also arrested and charged.
According to DRPS the accused was using adult entertainment establishments and online platforms to traffic victims throughout the GTA.
Michael Mitchell, age 33, of Pickering is charged with multiple offences alongside drug and firearms charges, including:
- Trafficking in Persons (two charges)
- Material Benefits from Sexual Services
- Procuring/Exercising Control
- Procuring/Recruit Person to Provide Sexual Services
Four other people face charges related to drugs and firearms.
Police are concerned that there may be more victims that have yet to come forward.
