More than $35K and 22K lbs of food donated during Canstruction

The Food Bank of Waterloo Region is celebrating the end of another successful Canstruction campaign.

During the event, local groups use food to create incredible, and sometimes gravity defying, structures at Conestoga Mall in Waterloo during March Break.

This year, 13 teams competed and supporters were asked to make a donation to vote for their favourite creation. The People’s Choice Award went to Brock Solution’s Mario-themed designed which brought in 8,640 meals throughout the voting process.

This year’s winners are:

• People’s Choice Award | Brock Solutions (“It’s-A-Me Can-io”)
• Best Original Design | Stubbe’s Precast (“Turning Hunger Around”)
• Structural Ingenuity | Conestoga College ACET Program (“Ohana Means Family and Family Means No One Goes Hungry”)
• Best Use of Labels | Stubbe’s Precast (“Turning Hunger Around”)
• Most Cans | Van Harten Land Surveying (“Measured in Red”)
• Best Meal | Steed and Evans (“Building More than Roads”)

All told, 22,522 lbs of food and $35,443 were donated to the cause.

“Every year, Canstruction brings out the best in our community,” Kim Wilhelm, CEO of The Food Bank of Waterloo Region, said. “I’m so grateful to everyone who shows up, gets involved, and helps make sure no one in Waterloo region goes hungry—especially at a time when the need for food assistance remains high.”

The food will be distributed through the Community Food Assistance Network, a group of 61 organizations that provide food support to 73,000 people in Waterloo Region.
