Red Deer police charge local man with fentanyl trafficking after hotel bust

Police in Red Deer have charged a man with trafficking fentanyl after an investigation that started earlier this month.

RCMP said in a media release Friday that investigators acted on a tip they received in early November and used a search warrant on Wednesday for the man’s room in a South Hill hotel.

There, officers found 341 grams of fentanyl and $2,190 in cash.

The 44-year-old Red Deer resident is in jail awaiting a court date next week. He is charged with possession of fentanyl for the purpose of trafficking it and with possession of cash from crime.

Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid typically used to treat patients with severe pain, either chronic or following surgery. Illicit fentanyl, primarily manufactured in clandestine labs, is sold on the illegal drug market. It is generally mixed in with other illicit drugs to increase its potency and can be sold as powders, nasal sprays and counterfeit pills that often contain lethal doses.
