Wild weather: Cyclone devastates small French island, spring wildfires in the U.S.

Here’s a look at some of the weather stories making headlines around the world this past week:

Cyclone Garance

At least four people are dead following Cyclone Garance. The storm hit the French island territory of Reunion in the Indian Ocean, uprooting trees and causing devastating flooding.

Wind speeds of more than 200 km/h have led to widespread power outages and about 180,000 people are without power (almost half the population).

Tens of thousands of people also had no access to drinking water following the storm.

Spring wildfires in the U.S.

Spring wildfire season is underway in parts of the southeast U.S. Almost 200 fires are burning in the Carolinas and Georgia, forcing thousands of people to evacuate.

The region has gone through a dry and windy stretch, leading to ideal conditions for wildfires.

Most of the fires are being blamed on human activity, although at least one fire was caused by downed power lines.

Flooding in Ecuador

Heavy rain in Ecuador has triggered flooding, destroying homes and forcing hundreds of people to evacuate to shelters.

States of emergency were declared in six coastal provinces and at least 10 people are dead.

Two of those deaths occurred when a building collapsed.

Streets have flooded in many areas and almost twenty rivers have spilled over their banks.
