Turning sunnier and a lot warmer as we head into the weekend

Snow’s in the rear-view mirror, sunshine and warmth on the horizon for Edmonton and area.

Snowfall warnings remain in effect for parts of east-central and southern Alberta with heavy snow hitting the Calgary area, Drumheller and south of Coronation.

That heavy snow has mostly stayed south of Red Deer, but anyone travelling the QEII this morning will encounter some snow (heavy at times) south of Red Deer all the way through to Calgary and Okotoks.

Snow clears out of the Calgary region later this afternoon, but it’ll stick around through to this evening in east-central Alberta (from around Wainwright south to Medicine Hat).

Edmonton’s on the northern edge of the clouds this morning. We have sunny skies across northern Alberta this morning and we’ll see some sun breaking through the clouds later today in Edmonton.

Temperatures will stay on the chilly side for one more day. We’ll be below 0 C for most of the day with a high near the freezing mark this afternoon.

Friday starts out in the -10 C range, but quickly climbs above 0 C and should hit a high near 7 C in the afternoon.

A low-pressure system pushing across northern Alberta overnight brings a chance of some flurries or light snow to the Fort McMurray region early Friday.

But, Edmonton should just be under partly cloudy skies on Friday with a slight risk of a spotty shower late in the day.

Mainly sunny to partly cloudy skies for the weekend with daytime highs jumping back into double digits in Edmonton.

We’ll get to the 10-14 C range on Saturday afternoon, then into the mid teens Sunday.

Then...highs near 20 C for Monday/Tuesday.

Looking LONG RANGE: There’s a chance of showers late Wednesday and/or Thursday of next week.

That’ll probably knock daytime highs back to the 7-10 C range for Thursday.

But...back to the teens for the end of next week.

So, this weekend represents a significant flip in the weather pattern.

We’ve been cooler than average through the first half of April, but the back half is trending average to warmer than average.
