Threats to shoot students at Alberta school lead to arrest: RCMP

Update: The youth was released without charges after Mounties were unable to verify the original source of the threats.

A youth is accused of threatening to shoot students at an Alberta high school.

Mounties say they got reports that a youth was making threats on Snapchat to shoot students at William E. Hay Stettler Secondary School in Stettler at 10:15 p.m. on Wednesday.

One person was taken into custody and police say charges of uttering threats are pending.

The youth will be taken before a Justice of the Peace to determine future court dates and determine release status.

According to a news release, police do not believe there is an ongoing risk to students or staff, but Mounties say a police presence will be maintained at the school out of an abundance of caution.

Anyone with information about the threats is asked to call Stettler RCMP at 403-742-3381 or to report it anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
