St. Albert daycare issued probationary licence for inadequate supervision: province

A probationary licence has been issued to a daycare centre in St. Albert for concerns of inadequate supervision, the province announced on Tuesday.

The probationary licence for St. Albert Day Care Centre at 6 Cunningham Road is set to expire on March 13, 2026.

In a news release, the province said the daycare had ongoing non-compliance with provincial standards and issues with inadequate supervision.

Provincial data shows the daycare was found non-compliant for staffing and supervision as well as incident reporting issues on Oct. 29 with an order to remedy by Nov. 17.

On Nov. 20 the daycare was cited for not complying with program plans and again on Nov. 26 for staffing and supervision.

Since June 26, 2024, the centre has received 11 non-compliances.

The daycare is now required to notify all parents of their probationary status and must give evidence of that notification to the Alberta education and child-care ministry.

Families looking for alternative child-care options can call Childcare Connect at 1-844-644-5165 or use the government’s Child Care Lookup tool online.

Probationary licences are issued when a licenced child-care program does not meet the standards set out by the Early Learning and Child Care Act.

If a child-care program is unable to return to compliance during the probationary period, a suspended licence will expire and not be reinstated. The province says cancellation of a licence can happen if the level of risk continues or escalates.

A child-care provider who disagrees with a licensing decision has 30 days to file an appeal.
