Multiple west Edmonton neighbourhoods lost power for more than an hour Tuesday.

The outage began at 3:50 p.m. and affected 1,515 users in Britannia Youngstown, Glenwood, Place LaRue, Summerlea and West Meadowlark Park.

Epcor said it was caused by a pole fire. The fire was out and power was restored at 5:04 p.m.

According to an Epcor representative, pole fires typically happen in the spring and are caused by a build up of sand and salt from winter traffic.

“Moisture can then mix with the debris to create a conductive path for electricity to travel from the wires to the pole, causing a fire,” the representative said.
