Pick-up that rammed into patrol car did so ‘intentionally’: RCMP

A 34-year-old Leduc man has been charged with assault of a police officer. RCMP said he intentionally rammed an officer's SUV.

Mounties say the driver of a pick-up truck which rammed into the back of a Leduc officer’s patrol car Monday morning had intentionally accelerated to hit it.

An officer with the Leduc RCMP detachment was patrolling 50 Avenue in the city when he was struck from behind by a pick-up truck, a Wednesday release said.

Both vehicles went into the ditch. When the pick-up driver tried to flee, Mounties say the then-injured officer chased him down and took him into custody.

The officer was taken to hospital and has since been released.

Investigators now say that the driver of the truck “accelerated towards and intentionally rammed the officer.”

The driver, a 34-year-old Leduc man, faces charges of aggravated assault on a police officer, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, failure to stop at an accident causing bodily harm and resisting arrest.

He was remanded into custody and is set to appear in court on Thursday.

The news release added that, since 2023, instances of assault on police with a weapon or that have caused bodily harm have increased by 23 per cent in Alberta.
