Old Strathcona hosts winter wonderland celebration

Whyte Avenue helped Edmontonians get into the festive spirit with twinkling lights, street performances and a winter clothing drive on Saturday.

The Old Strathcona Business Association (OSBA) has joined the festivities with their Winter Whyte Light Up event, a holiday festival designed to keep spirits up during the winter.

“I hope (visitors) learn a little more about the district, feel a little more comfortable in their community and have a little fun,” said Andrea Donini, the interim executive director of the OSBA.

This year featured cultural teachings from Bent Arrow Traditional Healing Society and live music emceed by Mrs. Claus and the Grinch, played by Claudia and Stretcher Hartout.

Among the street performances, twinkling lights and family-friendly activities was also a winter clothing drive held by the Mustard Seed for Edmonton’s homeless population.

Winter Whyte Light Up only runs until 8 p.m. on Saturday, but a host of other markets and events are available all weekend.
