A program aimed at improving surgery outcomes for Albertans is being expanded.

The Alberta Health Services (AHS) prehabilitation program was launched in Edmonton hospitals in 2023. It prepares patients for surgery physically and emotionally, helping them feel ready, build strength and adopt habits that will improve their outcomes.

AHS says prehabilitation is supported by research and is considered an “emerging best practice,” which can reduce surgical risks and improve patient experiences.

The program will now be available to all adult Albertans waiting for surgery at an AHS facility or a chartered surgical facility. Patients can be referred by a health-care provider or sign up online.

“Prehabilitation programs are essential for improving surgical outcomes and recovery,” Adriana LaGrange, minister of health, said in a Thursday release.

“By preparing patients physically and mentally before surgery, this approach enhances healing, reduces complications, and empowers individuals to actively participate in their recovery process.”

“By optimizing a patient’s health before surgery, programs like prehab aim to ensure many patients can go home after surgery sooner, with fewer complications,” added Dr. Chris Eagle, interim chief executive officer of Acute Care Alberta.

“This improves patient flow in healthcare facilities, which is important in the long-term to improve Albertans access to healthcare.”

AHS said more than 2,700 patients have been referred to the program so far. Those Albertans, it added, have responded positively and reported improved recovery.

As of November, there were 80,000 Albertans waiting for a surgery.

More information on prehabilitation and how to apply can be found on the AHS website.
