Measles exposures reported at Chick-fil-A, Costco in west Edmonton as cases grow in Alberta

Published:

Alberta Health Services is warning that people in Edmonton may have been exposed to measles in two locations on April 1.

Alberta Health Services (AHS) is reporting two cases of measles exposure last week at two west Edmonton locales.

The provincial health authority issued warnings Tuesday in a media release that people who, on April 1, were at the Costco at 10310 186 St. from 3-6:30 p.m. and at the nearby Chick-Fil-A at 10104 186 St. from 4:20-4:45 p.m. may have been exposed to the highly-contagious disease that is spread through the air.

AHS also reported new cases in Two Hills, Vegreville, Tofield and Holden, all communities within an hour’s drive east of Edmonton.

Children under the age of one, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems are most at risk from measles.

The province encourages people to check their level of immunization against measles. They said two doses of vaccine provides almost 100-per-cent protection from measles, while one dose gives 85-to-95-per-cent protection.

AHS says people who develop symptoms are advised to stay home and call Health Link at 811 before visiting a health-care facility, including a family physician clinic or a pharmacy.

The health authority says anyone who may have been at these places during these times and was born in 1970 or later with less than two documented doses of measles-related vaccine is “strongly encouraged” to review their immunization documentation and monitor themselves for symptoms.
