Edmonton weather: Snow stacks up as temperatures fall

Rain flipped over to wet snow overnight in the Edmonton region and we’ll continue to see snow throughout the day today.

Intensity will vary, but it’ll be in the area right through to early Friday morning.

We’re still expecting about 5 to 10 cm of snow by the end of today and then another 2 to 5 cm is possible overnight.

As expected, it’s stacking up a lot more on grassy or snow-covered areas than it is on roads. But, as temperatures cool through the day, we’ll start to see some road accumulation as well.

So … the late-day commute will probably be worse than this morning’s commute.

Temperatures will drop 2 or 3 degrees below zero by this afternoon.

We’ll have 15-20 km/h wind speeds with gusts of 30-40 km/h for much of the day. Once the snowflakes start to become a little fluffier, blowing snow will become more of an issue.

Snow tapers off overnight or early Friday morning, although we’ll stay cloudy through the day Friday.

The cooler air will stick around for several days.

Daytime highs are expected to be in the 0 to -4 C range Friday/Saturday/Sunday. We should be back to the 5 degree range by early-mid next week.

Elsewhere around the province - Snowfall Warnings remain in place for the mountain parks and foothills, areas from Barrhead/Athabasca south to Camrose and then east into the Edmonton region.

Snow will move out of western Alberta tonight and should exit east-central Alberta by mid-morning Friday.
