Edmonton weather: Morning showers move out, warm weather stays

Published:

A wet start to Tuesday, then clearing and warming.

A wet start to the day but we’ll get some sunny breaks this afternoon and temperatures will get to double digits again as the warm spell continues.

The area of rain that moved north of the Edmonton region overnight is sweeping back into the area as the flow has swung around to the northwest on the backside of the trough of low pressure.

Based on radar, it looks like the heavier, steadier pockets of rain will remain north of Edmonton through this morning.

Showers should move out of the Edmonton region by mid-to-late morning. Then, just a risk of a spotty pop-up shower late this afternoon.

Most of the more organized showers will be in the Red Deer/Coronation area this afternoon, with a risk of a few lightning strikes.

We’re also expecting some showers/rain around Fort McMurray this afternoon/evening.

Back to some sunshine for Wednesday/Thursday in Edmonton and across much of central and northern Alberta.

The exception is in the west, where we have a chance of some scattered showers from the Peace Country south through toward Jasper/Edson areas.

Temperatures remain above the seasonal averages through the remainder of this week and it looks like more of the same for next week.

The average daytime highs for this time of year in Edmonton are in the 8 to 10 degree range.

We’ll get to around 13 C today, and then back up into the mid to upper teens for Wednesday/Thursday/Friday.

There’s some colder air aloft that’ll dig in across the province this weekend.

The modelling isn’t really pushing any precip through Edmonton and area, but I think we’ll see some increased cloud (and I don’t think we can rule out at least the CHANCE of some precip).

Daytime highs will pull back closer to 10 C for the weekend.

Elsewhere - we could see some heavier snow through the mountains and foothills and possibly some rain turning to snow near the Canada/United States border.

A few wet flurries are also possible in parts the High Level and Fort McMurray regions this weekend.

Looking LONG range: Daytime highs in the mid to upper teens next week in Edmonton with no significant chance of precipitation.
