Edmonton Humane Society launches winter weekend day camps

A group of kids got a behind the scenes look at the Edmonton Humane Society on Friday and learned how they can help animals in the community.

The Edmonton Humane Society (EHS) is aiming to give younger kids a firsthand look at what it takes to run a shelter with the launch of their new winter weekend day camps.

On Saturday, Sunday and Dec. 20, the shelter is offering single-day camps for kids aged six to 12. During the $75 course, kids will tour the shelter, learn about animal welfare and how to become responsible with pets, craft toys and even try writing an adoption profile for animals they meet.

“It’s a really nice way for them to get to see everything behind the scenes,” said CEO Liza Sunley.

She noted that each camp day will have opportunities to interact with both shelter animals and ambassador animals who were adopted through the EHS.

“It’s a nice mix of fun and engaging opportunities,” she said.

“We want to build another generation of people that really care about animals and know how to care for them properly.”

Although the EHS runs similar camps through the summer, this is the first time it’s been offered on a weekend. Sunley said the additional days this year were to give parents a chance to do some holiday shopping alone.

The profits from the camp get re-invested back into the EHS.

Spots are still open for all three camp days on the EHS website.
