‘A big, fun, thing’: Kids and cops connect in 14th annual McCauley Cup

Saturday saw members of the Edmonton Police Service and up-and-coming players from the community facing off in the 14th annual McCauley Cup.

The event started in 2009 as a way to bring members of the EPS and inner-city youth together.

Police say many of the youths return year-after-year and the cup gives parents the chance to get to know beat officers working in the area.

“You see them grow into young adults, men, and I’m pretty proud to see that they’re still coming back, and they’re, they’re doing well and they still want to be part of this,” rink manager Dan Glugosh told CTV News Edmonton.

“Some of them even bring their kids back, so that’s really cool.”

“If I was to tell anyone that wasn’t from McCaulay about this, I’d tell them, it’s a big, fun, thing that we all connect with all the cops, and we all become friends like family,” community member Connor Beckworth said. “Some of them I met two years ago, three years ago, and I declare them as a brother, and it’s fun.”

Donated skates and equipment were available so all kids in the community who wanted to participate had the opportunity to do so and there was hot chocolate and treats available for parents.
