A woman has been charged in connection with a homicide that happened more than two years ago.
Emergency crews were called to a drug overdose in the area of 79 Street and 118 Avenue on Dec. 28, 2022, where they found the body of Joseph Mercier, 60.
Mercier’s death was not considered suspicious as part of the initial police investigation, a toxicology report completed in March 2023 found his cause of death to be fentanyl toxicity.
After the report was released, a witness came forward with information that caused police to reopen the investigation.
“When witnesses come forward, it can make all the difference for an investigation and can help provide a measure of resolve to the people who are trying to understand what happened to a loved one,” Det. Sylvie Boy with the EPS’ Homicide Section said in a news release.
“It is incredibly important to speak to police if you see something that doesn’t look or feel right.”
On March 26, Morgan Churchill, 40, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder.
Police say the victim and the accused knew each other.
