Officials said early that morning she gained entry to the apartment building, in the 900 block of Seventh Avenue S.W., to steal packages that had been left in the lobby.
The guard, identified as 73-year-old George Fernandez, intervened and attempted to stop Ahenakew, ordering her to leave the building.
Police said an altercation ensued, with Ahenakew pushing Fernandez away from her, causing him to fall backward to the ground.
Fernandez hit his head on the floor and remained motionless when Ahenakew proceeded into the office area, taking a laptop and other items.
Workers found Fernandez on the floor when they arrived at 8 a.m.
He was taken to hospital but died a day later.
Ahenakew is expected in court on April 16.
