Washington Capitals goaltender Logan Thompson battles the odds and realizes Olympic dream

Logan Thompson took an unconventional route and, despite having the odds stacked against him, never gave up on his dream of becoming an NHL goaltender.

Logan Thompson grew up playing in the Blackfoot Minor Hockey Association in Calgary, which turned out to be one of the early stops on a long, winding road that has led to playing goalie for Team Canada in the 2026 Winter Olympics.

His story is one of never giving up, even when all the odds seem to be stacked against you.

Despite having a solid junior career with the Brandon Wheat Kings, Thompson was never drafted into the NHL. But the 28-year-old never gave up on his dream of being a goaltender at the highest level.

Thompson said he had to have an “I’ll prove you wrong” attitude every step of the way.

“You always need to have a little bit of that F-you personality if you want to keep climbing the ranks,” said Thompson.

“For now my mindset is just to stay in the league and be a top goalie and just help my team win every game.”

Olympic dream

Thompson has done plenty of that at the NHL level since signing as a free agent with the Vegas Golden Knights in 2020.

Between Vegas and since he was traded to Washington, Thompson has a 105-54 and 21 record with a 2.58 goals against average.

He’s become one of the top goaltenders in the league and Hockey Canada took notice.

He was recently named to the Canadian men’s hockey roster for the Winter Olympics in Milano-Cortina.

He remembers the call well.

“Getting the call was a dream come true,’ Thompson said.

“Like I said (to Hockey Canada), really thankful for the opportunity and just excited to get over there.”

“Any role they want me to be, I’m just going to be the best Logan Thompson I can be.”

Thompson will take a bit of Calgary with him to the games. He’ll wear a mask painted by local artist Dave Fried who says Thompson wanted to make sure it represented where he comes from.

“He wanted a Calgary/Alberta vibe for his mask,” said Fried.

“He still wants a Canadian leaf on there but the in the background he definitely wanted the Calgary Tower in there (too),” Fried said. “I kind of asked if he wanted the pond hockey scene in the front and then the city and mountains in the back.”

Painting a lot of Olympic masks

Fried has been painting masks for Thompson for about 10 years and have always had a good working relationship. His mask also has a grizzly bear in the mountains and a moose on the back plate.

That’s not the only Olympic mask Fried has painted. He also did one for Darcy Kuemper on the men’s team and for Emerance Maschmeyer and Kayle Osborne on the Canadian Women’s team.

On top of that, Fried painted the masks for the men’s paralympic goaltenders.

He’s grateful for the opportunity.

“I got fortunate enough to get a big swath of Team Canada goalies this year which is a huge honour and also a huge responsibility,” said Fried.

“I want to make sure these are representing our country and the goalies themselves.”

It’s not lost on Fried that he gets to be a small part of Team Canada. He says his family will be tuned into the hockey games.

“My parents are so stoked hat I get to do this,” he said.

“They’re all over it too and they’re really proud. It’s pretty cool to get the chance to do this for sure.”
