Teamworks Career Centre puts opportunities on display with job fair

Teamworks Career Centre held its career fair at the Lethbridge Trade and Convention Centre, with a number of employers looking to fill positions.

Teamworks Career Centre held one of its semi-annual job fairs at the Lethbridge Trade and Convention Centre.

Employers were out in force looking to fill a number of positions.

And about 1,000 people visited the Teamworks Career Fair looking for a job.

The turnout is what organizers typically expect, and it gives employers a wide range of applicants to pick from.

“It’s another great way to connect job seekers with employers face-to-face and hopefully get people employed today,” said Barb Wolstoncroft, Teamworks Career Centre manager.

Most, if not all, of the more than 60 employers who took part utilize some form of online applications or job boards, but for many, nothing quite replaces meeting potential applicants face-to-face.

“Tried doing the university thing and stuff and just didn’t get a lot of responses from that. Whereas when we come here, it’s a broader range of people that come, so we like that a lot. That always helps,” said Tim Herndon, Firefly Solar regional manager.

Some businesses reported difficulty filling positions.

Some are expanding quickly and haven’t been able to keep up their hiring.

Job fairs provide an opportunity to fill many positions at once.

“We really need reliable people and many people who are going to make sure they show up. We need people who are really open and willing to train and learn new skills,” said Carlos Vidal, Tradesman Manufacturing people development manager.

It isn’t just employers who benefit from the job fair.

Teamworks says plenty of job seekers have had a hard time in a tough job market.

But meeting employers in person helps to give applicants a leg up.

“It gives them a chance to shine and really show who they are and showcase their skill set,” Wolstoncroft said.

“Online is hard. If you don’t have a good resume, it’s hard to impress employers.”

Teamworks is planning to host its next job fair in March.
