This year’s campaign will begin on the city’s north side.

Starting Tuesday, crews will put signs in the area one day prior to sweepers arriving, weather permitting.

Residents are asked to move their vehicles, or they could face a $25 fine.

The city says each year, thousands of tonnes of sand, dirt and other debris from more than 580 kilometres of roads in Lethbridge are removed.

“This winter was quite challenging for street and road operations. We had to apply a lot of sand and salt, so that is what we are coming out to pick up,” said Juliane Ruck, City of Lethbridge transportation operations manager.

“It’s to protect the environment so stuff doesn’t end up in the storm system and to also create safety for pedestrians, cars, bike riders—everybody that travels along the roads.”

The rock and sand collected during street sweeping is then sorted and will be reused next winter.
